As the Moon in Cancer approaches
fullness opposite the Sun in Capricorn, it is that time of year to meditate
on the archetypes of the Great Mother and Great Father; to
seek to balance their energies within ourselves, and reflect on their dynamics
in the world without. The total lunar eclipse that occurs this Full
Moon underscores the growing tension between humanity's heavenly parent-gods,
and the child-shadow of earth, visible between.
You might say that the Solar
Father is outshining the Lunar Mother. Indeed, the cosmic set-up
that marks this month's Full Moon is an apt astrological metaphor for the
current political climate. As President-elect George W. Bush seeks to put
into place a cabinet that endorses mainstream, Saturnian patriarchal values
that are anti-affirmative action, anti-environment, and pro-big-business,
the more inclusive, nurturing Cancerian "mothering" ethics of the moon
are eclipsed.
It is a pivotal time to make
one's voice heard in the political realm. But
mystics know that genuine
political change cannot occur without corresponding inner work. For what
we are witnessing externally mirrors the ongoing imbalance in the cultural
collective psyche -- the tension of the opposites that is continually seeking
to come into new levels of harmony.
Earth's shadow made visible
at this Full Moon, asks that we look at ourselves, globally and personally.
Take a moment to peer within the magic cauldron of your own psyche. Examine
the alchemy of your own "inner government." First, call up the
imprints impressed on you by your own mother and father. Who in your family
set the rules and enacted discipline? Who nurtured the hurt wounds and
cared for your needs? Were these two forces temperate -- or immoderate
and extreme? Were they in balance or in conflict?
Now, look at your own life.
How do you parent yourself? Are you harsh toward your needs and emotional
vulnerabilities, repressing and rejecting that side of yourself? Or, are
you awash in self-pity, indulging yourself as a helpless victim and lacking
the will to endure life's hardships? What about the way you live your life?
Does the larger share of your day go toward work and duty, while forgetting
to smell the roses and gaze at the sky? Or, do you while away time day-dreaming
and musing, ignoring the hard work necessary to accomplish your life's
purpose?
However you design your
ritual this Full Moon, a fine intention would be to come into wise balance
within yourself. You might picture yourself the child of a sage
father and a loving mother. Nestled between them, you receive those qualities
each embodies in its highest manifestation. From the father, discipline
and mastery. From the mother, creativity and compassion. Together the Solar
King and the Lunar Queen form an archetypal model of cosmic parents - the
ones we wish we had had, and the ones we wish we could embody to our own
selves, our children - and see reflected in society at large.
Breathe this balance for the world.
