Pisces/Virgo Full Moon: The Challenge of Integrity
by Karri Allrich

In this ancient tidal cycle of Pisces, many of us may feel adrift...susceptible to the undertow of the collective; pulled by restless currents and uneasiness.  As the power in our (North American) government body shifts direction and intention, many spiritually minded folks are searching for solid ground to make their stand; looking for a way to focus their energy, choose their tactics and draw their boundaries.  The very earth herself has been groaning and shifting.  Earthquakes unnerve the Northwest and spring storms deluge the Northeast.  We who honor the divine feminine look to the Moon in her mystery to guide us.  What wisdom does she hold for us in this month of Piscean undercurrents?  What lesson will anchor us?

A full moon in Virgo may be exactly what we need!

As our beloved crescent waxes toward completion, let us honor the principles of Virgo in our ritual.  She is the archetypal virgin, complete unto herself.  Rather than limiting our understanding of “virgin” as a synonym for chaste, let us expand the fullness of this shining archetype.  She has much to teach us during this anxious interval.

To honor this archetype, select for your altar an appropriate emblem, something that speaks to you in her voice.  Reflecting on the virgin archetype is a favorite spiritual practice of mine...I collect icons of Mary and the black Madonna.  Tiny paintings and embroidered cards, studded milagros and Italian decoupage... I treasure them all, and place them around my altar interspersed with big bellied clay figures and precious feathers, stones and herb bundles.  She is a guise of the Goddess, both maiden and mother, embodying integrity and strength.  With this image on your altar, are you inspired to chant, sing or move in a sympathetic way?

As a manifestation of the full moon, Virgo the virgin teaches us about setting boundaries.  Not as a way to exclude ourselves, but rather, as a tool to define ourselves.  I think of this archetype as proactive...not passive, for she defines her very essence by the power of her integrity, her autonomy and self definition.  She urges us to examine our choices with a discriminating eye and a commitment to the truth.  At the heart of your ceremony, is there a particular choice you need to reconsider now?

As we embrace this full moon and look ahead to the Vernal Equinox, anticipating softer days and the stirrings of rebirth, let us center ourselves in a clarity of purpose. Let us choose to be impeccable, in word and deed.

What will we give birth to in these warmer days ahead? How will we contain our intentions and infuse the form of our creativity?  Virgo favors lists, so take some time apart and craft one.  Perhaps a list of healthy goals to strengthen the body's vigor. Or take an earnest inventory of values and priorities.

During this windy month of transition, when shifting tides of intention unsettle us, take refuge in the virgin archetype and claim impeccability as your compass.
