| What
does listening to the zodiac do for us at each moon cycle? It attunes
us to the yet living quality of this ancient rhythm. It sharpens
our senses to new ways to bring ourselves forth. It puts us on the
alert -- as an animal living in the wild -- to something new in the air... |

What’s
in the sky this new moon?
Mars, Jupiter, the Sun
and Moon are all in Leo – which would make a spectacular celestial
display if we could see them. This is perhaps ironic, since Leo is
about visibility, but below the horizon at night and lost in the Sun’s
glare during the day, this grouping suggests we might first gaze inward
to renew our strength (Mars) and optimism (Jupiter). The new crescent
Moon
will appear just after sunset the day following the New Moon, near Mercury,
low on the western horizon for most of the month. The brightest planet,
Venus,
will remain in the west after sunset for another couple months. Think
of pleasure and beauty when you see her. Dedicate yourself to making
these qualities brighter in your own life, and the goddess will be pleased.
(And if you’re a very early riser, soon enough you’ll find Jupiter shining
brightly in the east. By the end of August Jupiter will be
ten degrees above the eastern horizon at dawn.) |
What
wants to grow this cycle?
Leo qualities, of
course! Love. Self-Confidence. Generosity. Romance.
Determination. Playfulness. Dignity. Enthusiasm.
Fun. Pride. Self-Actualization. Courage. Passion.
Appreciation. The ability to see life through the eyes of a child.
Archetypes for Leo
include the Lion, the King, the Performer, the Lover and the Child.
Which archetype speaks most to you now? This is an optimum month
for growing your understanding of this archetype and for enhancing your
ability to embody it energetically.
To get more specific about
what you can best grow this cycle, know that astrology typically answers
“what” questions by looking at houses. Look to the house of
your birth chart where the New Moon falls: here’s your personal
seed bed. Here lie opportunities, old and new business that have
been waiting all year for this moment to start their germination.
Chances are that the Sun’s transit through Leo (since July 22) has already
been revealing what needs to develop for you this cycle.
How
can you be successful this month?
Astrology typically answers
“how” questions with signs. Signs suggest the kind of energy
we need to bring to our endeavors. We all find some signs more
comfortable than others, so at each New Moon we’re challenged to either
further develop a sign (or style of being) that’s easy for us, or to
explore and deconstruct our resistance to an inherently more difficult
energy. Your ease expressing the qualities at the top of the previous
section can help you to assess where you’re beginning in the Leo journey
this cycle.

"The secret fate encoded
in our chart is a sign that, as the Jungian thinker James
Hillman has written,
"We are each born called." Imprinted on our souls the
split second it assumes
a human body is the pattern of a purpose, the secret
reason of our existence.

"I heard it on Oprah:
one out of every two women will die of heart disease. I also heard:
the greatest common sorrow among those with heart trouble is not feeling
appreciated. In astrology, Leo rules both the heart and appreciation.
This is an auspicious time to tend to both. . ..."
