Sabian Symbol: "An inventor performs a laboratory experiment -- the ability to relate seemingly unrelated facts."
What does listening to the zodiac do for us at each moon cycle?  It attunes us to the yet living quality of this ancient rhythm.  It sharpens our senses to new ways to bring ourselves forth.  It puts us on the alert -- as an animal living in the wild -- to something new in the air...

What’s in the sky this new moon?

When Venus is retrograde, as she is this New Moon, she temporarily disappears from the sky.  The ancients believed she was on journey to the underground, consorting with the dead.  Moderns believe we are likewise re-visiting the past and exploring what’s been hidden in our psyches.  Discord and upsets now are revelatory, signs of how far we are from satisfying our deepest longings and creative needs.  Venus returns to the sky, a morning star, on November 6 (she’ll be in the morning sky through mid July).  Attunement with Venus can come from starting your days with a moment of quiet meditation, then visualizing the day ahead blessed with her grace, fulfilling your deepest longings for pleasure, equanimity, and creative success.

On November 13, Mercury reaches its superior conjunction with the Sun, which means it is passing into the evening sky, though we won’t be able to see it as an evening star until mid-December.  On November 18, you might be able to see the spectacular annual Leonid meteor showers.  Astronomers are promising a dense cloud of particles, though for me, several years of shivering in the dark and scanning the skies haven’t brought even one shooting star!  The Moon, however, never disappoints.  This month, the sight of her slender Crescent, within a day or two of the New Moon, officially launches Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, throughout which Saturn, Jupiter, Mars (and Venus of course) will all be visible in the pre-dawn sky.

What wants to grow this cycle?

Your sympathy and compassion.  These two words don’t usually come to mind with Scorpio.  We think first of its brooding traits, like the clutching, blood-red fingernails of the wicked queen in Snow White – Scorpio’s jealousy, its vengeance, its need to control the show, its underlying fear, suspicion and distrust.  But with Neptune squaring this New Moon in Scorpio, the transforming agent for this lunar cycle is compassion.  We can dissolve the dark stuff that wants to plan our negative futures by showing our own (or others’) negativity some compassion.

Tibetan Buddhists have a technique designed to effect this transformation:  tonglen.  In this practice, we breathe in the dark and toxic smoke of our own or others’ negativity, and we exhale white mist or moonlight, sending out happiness, joy, security, and ease.  We do this for our enemies and we do this for ourselves.  We take on pain and suffering, and we send out positive energy.  It might seem like we’re trying to be saints to do such a thing, but the real blessing of the practice is that it works a powerful transformation on ourselves.  It’s for our own good.  The magic lies in short-circuiting the way we usually go about things – which is to hold onto all the good and juicy feelings and push away all the bad ones.  That habit keeps our world the way it is.

Of course an easier way to compassionately lighten up is to follow the advice of Nancy Drew:  “Don’t ever let your troubles get in the way of enjoying a leisurely and delightful lunch,” (from The Secret of the Old Clock).  In other words, take time to smell the roses, or the steaming carrots, or the sweet essence of your being.

How can you be successful this month?

Astrology typically answers “what” questions by looking at houses.  Look to the house of your birth chart where the New Moon falls:  here’s your personal seed bed.  This is the place you usually “do Scorpio.”  Every year at this time, you transform something.  This is the area of life where you can be focused, resilient, tenacious, and incredibly perceptive.  This is where you are your best detective.  Each year, during the Scorpio New Moon cycle, you have a unique opportunity here… to release something old… to solve a mystery… or discover a secret that only you know.  (If you’d like to explore this is greater depth, you may enjoy my seasonal/new moon workshop, Twelve MoonsEmail me if you’d like more information!)

  • "As the ancients intuited, now is a propitious time to seek the support of our otherworldly allies: departed ancestors, soul guides, and the spirits of the planets, stars, oceans, trees, and all of nature. In other words, it is a time to open and receive from the magical realms that encircle and surround our material world with a powerful field of magnetic energy. The living beings of these spiral realms are always there, ready to guide and inspire us - yet our senses have become dulled to their presence.

  • The Work of the Season: Transformation, with Dana...

  • "I often enter the Scorpio season likewise unsettled.  This can happen after the explorations of intimacy during the previous Libra month.  With Libra’s greater sensitivity to outer feedback, we more readily see just how our lives are in--or out of--balance.  We want to get newly organized, make the right changes.  Autumn is the time to call back and re-organize the loose, outward-flowing patterns that flourished in the warmer months.  As the natural world draws its energy into the ground, we are likewise shifting our focus, to what matters at our roots.   ..."
