Sabian Symbol: "A fine lace handkerchief, heirloom from valorous ancestors; the ultimate validity of the many efforts of generations of men toward the building of a beautiful and significant culture."
What does listening to the zodiac do for us at each moon cycle?  It attunes us to the yet living quality of this ancient rhythm.  It sharpens our senses to new ways to bring ourselves forth.  It puts us on the alert -- as an animal living in the wild -- to something new in the air...

Virgo New Moon 'Scope
by Dana Gerhardt

What’s in the sky this new moon?

You won’t of course be able to see the moon on the New Moon night of the 6th—she’s below the horizon, in conjunction with the sun.  But the next day, on September 7, thirty minutes after sunset, you’ll find to the west a captivating wisp of moon, a delicate crescent of light.  Lower and to the left of the moon is Mercury; also to the left, but higher, is Venus—at its aphelion that day, being at the point in its orbit that’s furthest from the sun.  On September 11, if you’d like to escape the media hype, turn to the sky, where the moon is nestled in the difficult-to-see stars of Libra--the sign of peace, fairness, equanimity.  Brighter will be the constellation of Scorpio (where the moon transits in the “tropical”—not sidereal-- zodiac).  Scorpio doesn’t forget.  Some may feel vengeful.  Others may feel a more positive urge towards regeneration and transformation.  The latter may better suit the purpose of this Virgo New Moon.

What wants to grow this cycle?

Virgo qualities, of course!  Discrimination.  Love of Perfection.  Studious.  Exacting.  Clean.  Humble.  Service-oriented.  Methodical.  Industrious.  Unafraid of the details.  Efficient.  Useful.  Organized.

Archetypes for Virgo include the Virgin, the Servant, the Perfectionist, the Critic, the One Who Brings Order.  Popular astrology has diluted these images with more role-based ones: the Secretary, the Librarian, and Bookkeeper.  Though there’s nothing wrong with these occupations—I’ve happily worked at two of them myself--they’re generally offered as unflattering stereotypes. Virgo is typically seen as plain-dressed, uptight and bespectacled, in supporting rather than leading roles.  I think this speaks of our diminished imagination of Virgo in the world…  a world infatuated with the performance and super-stardom of Leo.  Virgo follows Leo in the cyclic order, not just to do its clean-up, but to evolve us.  Search for this energy inside yourself now and see what archetypal image fits it best.  (The Goddess keeps coming to my mind!)

To get more specific about what you can best grow this cycle, know that astrology typically answers “what” questions by looking at houses.  Look to the house of your birth chart where the New Moon falls:  here’s your personal seed bed.  Here lie opportunities, old and new business that have been waiting all year for this moment to start their germination.  Chances are that the Sun’s transit through Virgo (since August 23) has already been revealing what needs to develop for you this cycle.

How can you be successful this month?

Astrology typically answers “how” questions with signs.  Signs suggest the kind of energy we need to bring to our endeavors.   We all find some signs more comfortable than others, so at each New Moon we’re challenged to either further develop a sign (or style of being) that’s easy for us, or to explore and deconstruct our resistance to an inherently more difficult energy.  Your ease expressing the qualities at the top of the previous section can help you to assess where you’re beginning in the Virgo journey this cycle.  Negative Virgo qualities include being critical (especially self-critical), complaining, worried, overly cautious, prudish, judgmental of others, and nit-picky.  If you find these as part of your Virgo expression, call on the Virgin to help you transmute them!

  • The daily moon sign, phase and aspects...
"At the New Moon refresh your animal nature, senses awake, happily, simply aware of being alive..." (Today's Moon)
  • Meditate on 9-11's Star Messages of Peace, with Pythia...

  • "Exact on September 11th,  expansive-hearted Jupiter in Leo and spiritual idealist Neptune in Aquarius reach opposition, lighting up the heavens with a visionary message.  These two planets aligning on such an historic day send a cosmic signal that a collective gateway of consciousness is opening, allowing higher spiritual energies to rain down healing balm onto the suffering caused by the horrific terrorist attacks.  Despite the all-pervasive media-hyped sentimentality, it is just possible that a genuinely profound deepening of the American soul is at hand. ..."

  • Get organized, with Dana...

  • "Then last night I overheard it.  The nine-year-old said to the ten-year-old, “This year I’m going to do all my homework as soon as I come home from school.  I’m going to study real hard.”  The ten-year-old replied, “And I’m going to get good grades.”  So they did have Virgo’s hunger for personal transformation!  ..."
