Sabian Symbol:  "Child and dog play gravely, with eyeglasses on their noses."
What does listening to the zodiac do for us at each moon cycle?  It attunes us to the yet living quality of this ancient rhythm.  It sharpens our senses to new ways to bring ourselves forth.  It puts us on the alert -- as an animal living in the wild -- to something new in the air...

Sagittarius New Moon 'Scope
by Dana Gerhardt

Sagittarius stopped in after a morning of hang-gliding. Her wild gypsy hair was tied in a knot; her goddess gown ("So inconvenient!" she mumbled) was pinned above her knees. "You look awful," she told me as I poured her favorite ginseng elixir, "You should get out more often." Sagittarius never hides what she feels. But it’s pointless to stay irritated with her for long. She’s both earnest and playful. Keeping company with her is like racing with the mustangs across a wide open space. When she speaks, her words sound. Like a concert of Tibetan bells and bowls, they reverberate long after they’re uttered, traveling on the air, until they hit a single vibration that feels like… truth. Sagittarius has studied with the world’s great philosophers. She’s climbed the highest peaks and lounged on exquisite tropical shores. No wonder she’s perpetually optimistic. Her life is large.

At the Sagittarius New Moon, her effervescent spirit is available to you now. Look for her in the Sagittarius house of your chart. She may be curled up in the living room reading a mind-blowing book if Sagittarius is on your 4th house cusp of home. She might be that sudden inspiration at your hairdresser’s if Sag is in your 1st house of appearance ("Do something daring and fun!"). If Sagittarius is in your 7th house of partnership, she might be sparkling behind your lover’s eyes ("Let’s go somewhere new!"). You’ll find her in whatever invites you toward a more expansive point of view. Run with her unfettered spirit, and you could find some truth that has been eluding you for months. Oh, I know, with the New Moon conjunct Mercury and Pluto conjunction, you might be sucked into familiar, obsessive, even fanatical thoughts. But going in circles, with your eyes on your shoelaces, that’s no way to head into winter. Stop. Now. And breathe. Take a long look at the horizon. Let your life feel large again.

Sagittarius wants to feed you with wisdom. Her enthusiasm and optimism are like a natural flu shot, immunizing you against cold weather doldrums. This cycle, seek out people, places, and texts that open your mind and get you excited about the future again. What question have you been pondering? Where have you felt stuck? Surrender to Sagittarius and she will reward you with a new vista and new inspiration. This New Moon’s whimsical Sabian Symbol must have been penned by Sagittarius herself: "A child and a dog wearing borrowed eyeglasses." She’s talking about you! With a little imagination and make-believe, you can be the child or the dog with x-ray vision, empowered with new lenses that open up the world. Let yourself see the future you really want to create. Let the Sagittarius cycle be the one where your life becomes adventurous again.

Let’s Get Personal

New Moons are universal. But for each of us, they will emphasize a different area of life. The house of your birth chart where the New Moon falls represents your personal New Moon seed bed. That house this month is where you’re innately comfortable with the Sagittarius energy, where every year at this time, you refill your cup with new wisdom and inspiration. There is vast library of knowledge here. There is a knapsack always at the ready for your inner seeker. Each year, during the Sagittarius New Moon cycle, you have a unique opportunity here… but you must give yourself the space to roam. Freedom, even if it’s just that quiet moment spent savoring your coffee, can open you up to truth you need to hear right now. (If you’d like to explore this is greater depth, you may enjoy my seasonal/new moon workshop, Twelve Moons.)

  • The daily moon sign, phase and aspects...
  • "At the New Moon refresh your animal nature, senses awake, happily, simply aware of being alive..." (Today's Moon)
  • New Moon Meditation, with Jean: Bring me my Arrows of Desire!

In the iconography of the Zodiac Sagittarius is depicted as a centaur, a powerful half-man, half-horse, armed with bow and arrow. The centaur’s powerful body moves swiftly toward far-off destinations; his mind strives with equal alacrity toward lofty intellectual and spiritual goals. His arrows (Latin "sagittae") course through the air toward precise targets. When Sun and Moon come together in this sign, it’s time to refresh our sense of vocation, to reflect on our goals and recommit ourselves to the quest for meaning, purpose and truth....

  • Season Teachings, with April: The Pilgrim.
Sagittarius, at its best, teaches a reverence for the truth. Sagittarius is the emperor with no clothes, who is so enlightened that he laughs at the absurdity of his nakedness instead of denying it. It is the pilgrim and the native, sharing a meal at the harvest table despite having not the slightest idea how to talk to one another. It is the Indiana farmgirl who keeps reaching for other worlds, even though she is scared to death of them, because she has a nagging feeling that her own world is a little too small...
